Yahoo! Search? Search Me!
December 10th 2008 23:59
There are rumors that Yahoo! wants to sell their search technology to Microsoft. Would this be the beginning of the break-up of Yahoo!, or does it mark the decision to move in a new direction? Obviously Yahoo! stock has been hammered since they turned down the offer of $31 per share from Microsoft earlier this year.
But if it's the search property that has value, explain this:
Yes, in an election year, with the Olympics in China, Russia invading neighboring countries, war in Iraq and nuclear weapons research in Iran, Britney Spears is the top item on Yahoo! Search.
What are the demographics for their users that a loser like Britney Spears is AGAIN first on the list? And how does a business interested in marketing eyeballs to service or product providers make this market niche a revenue generator?
And it doesn't get better! WWE (wrestling) is second. In the top ten, most are "teen idol"-type searches. What kind of value does Yahoo! expect to have on this function? Search me!
