Windfall Profits Tax on Oil Companies

September 5th 2008 22:24
Barack Obama has called for a windfall profits tax on oil companies after another round of record earnings were reported by the industry. As I mentioned here back in May, the only numbers being reported by the media, and repeated often by politicians of a certain stripe, are the earnings.

Horrors! They made money!

Now columnist George F. Will, writing in the Washington Post, has added a different view on the Exxon Mobil numbers of note:

...Obama promises a $1,000 check for every family, financed by a "windfall profits" tax on oil companies. Obama is unintimidated by the rule against legislating about subjects one cannot define.

Obama thinks government is not getting a "reasonable share" of oil companies' profits, which in 2007 were, as a percentage of revenue (8.3 percent), below those of U.S. manufacturing generally (8.9 percent). Exxon Mobil pays almost as much in corporate taxes to various governments as the bottom 50 percent of American earners pay in income taxes. Exxon Mobil does make $1,400 a second in profits -- hear the sharp intakes of breath from liberals with pursed lips -- but pays $4,000 a second in taxes and $15,000 a second in operating costs.

Yes, it's true. But Obama and Liberals in general don't need to be bothered with the truth. They are making plans for "change" and cannot be bothered with the truth along the way.

O'Reilly Calls for FFVs (LINK)

June 18th 2008 19:02
Last week Bill O'Reilly called on Congress to mandate flex fuel vehicles (FFV) in order to get the US off of oil. Here's his commentary and the analysis:

General Electric and Iran

June 17th 2008 04:20
Last month Howard Kurtz of The Washington Post wrote a long article analyzing the rants by Bill O'Reily against General Electric. O'Reily has repeatedly said that GE is doing business with Iran, and various GE spokespeople have denied the allegation.

Trying to find original sources is beyond the resources of this writer. Trying to understand today's headline, however, is another matter. As reported in AllHeadlineNews, today's news regarding General Electric is quite bad:

New York, NY (AHN) - JPMorgan Chase & Co. cut its recommendation on General Electric Co., which is the world's biggest maker of electricity generation equipment on Monday.

Shares of GE declined by as much as 2.0 percent to $28.46, which is the steepest decline in more than four years, before it retreated to $28.60.

How do you read all of this? Is it a grudge match of egos, or a real issue on the War against Terrorists?

General Motors' New Re-structure

June 3rd 2008 21:56
Earlier today GM announced that it would close four plants in a move toward making smaller cars and fewer trucks and SUVs.

The US auto industry has been challenged more than any other by a combination of forces: International competition, environmental regulations, labor union costs and benefits, and shifting consumer preferences. Now the high price of gasoline is adding to the burden of the automakers.

GM and Ford once had tried to make smaller cars in the US. After the second oil embargo Americans started calling for smaller, more efficient cars. However, once the cars were designed, tested, developed and produced, the fickle American consumer had changed priorities and it was Chrysler who had the vehicle with greatest demand: the minivan. The small cars rusted unsold and everyone went back to making larger (and larger) cars.

It's a shame that GM didn't take this opportunity to decide to make all their cars FFV (flex-fueled vehicle) and thereby prepare for a future with alternative fuel options. For more information about FFV and a plan for energy independence, see the Set America Free Coalition's website.

In the meantime, be prepared for a string of news reports about unemployed auto workers being re-trained for jobs that pay a fraction of what they were making, as well as about ghost towns left after GM closed the plants. Wouldn't it be nice to be able to move an LCD factory from Malasia or Singapore into one of the shuttered plants and to re-hire all that motivated labor? Yeah, wishful thinking.

The "S"-Word

May 31st 2008 19:37
The "S"-Word has been floating around Washington, DC, for decades. It is rarely spoken outloud and hardly ever even in private. But last week Representative Maxine Waters (D-CA), in lecturing oil industry executives, finally did it:

As transcribed by Investor's Business Daily, Waters said:

"This liberal will be all about socializing, uh, uh . . . would be about . . . basically taking over and the government running all of your companies," Rep. Maxine Waters told oil executives on May 22 during yet another show-trial congressional hearing.

Socialize - yes, a United States member of Congress said it. Maybe she meant to say "nationalize", but the difference is nill. Rep. Waters wants to socialize the oil industry so that prices would be lower. Of course, government-operated facilities are hallmarks of efficiency, so the price would obviously come down. Is that Rep. Waters' thinking?

I don't see any thinking behind her threat. Instead, there appears to be a whole lot of political posturing and ignorance. Rather than evaluating the whole process of building and operating an oil company, Rep. Waters (and others like her) are concentrating on the retail price. But look at the billions of dollars already invested into exploration and equipment, refining capacity, pumping stations, etc. and the oil industry is no more profitable than most large companies.

When oil companies were losing money in the 1990's, I don't remember anyone suggesting that Congress give them subsidies, as farmers get.

We can only hope that, after 18 years of this craziness, the voters in her district decide to elect someone else in November. Not likely....
