Yes, We Have No...Tomatoes?
June 9th 2008 06:12
News of salmonella-tainted tomatoes has caused Jack In The Box and McDonald's to stop serving tomatoes in their sandwiches. No reports of deaths caused by the contaminated tomatoes, as the FDA and CDC continue to track the cause of the contamination. The June 3rd warning about New Mexico and Texas incidents has been expanded to a nationwide warning.
According to USA Today, the culprit is a rare straing of salmonella known as Salmonella Saintpaul.
What is happening in the food industry in recent years? Is it just the 24-hour news cycle that churns out more reports of food contamination, or are there really more problems? We've had contaminated spinach, cheese, beef, ground beef and now tomatoes. Is enough being done for us to have safe food to eat, or will more inspection, more testing and more government programs be needed to ensure clean food?
