Book Review: Monkey Business: Swinging Through the Wall Street Jungle

March 8th 2011 21:33
Are you one of those people who thinks a "junk bond" is having a special relationship with a pile of trash? Well don't worry, Monkey Business: Swinging Through the Wall Street Jungle provides probably the most entertaining way to learn about investment banking. And in the wake of Borders filing for bankruptcy, I figured it would be an appropraite time to review some literature.

While Monkey Business is by no means a new book, it is still very relevant to the investment banking world. Authors John Rolfe and Peter Troob manage to create a humorous yet educational tone in their controversial autobiography, and one cannot help but respect the knowledge these men have about the business.

Rolfe and Troob use their hilarious candor to flow seamlessly through otherwise dry material, and their personalities complement each other like peanut butter and jelly. The authors hold nothing back, portraying many investment bankers as corrupt and money-obsessed degenerates.

At times, however, it becomes hard not to develop a slight bit of animosity towards the writers' lament for working and their constant denouncement of the profession. Take their complaints with a grain of salt, for many investment bankers do not hate their lives.

One is only left to wonder how the writers' peers would describe them if the tables were turned. It certainly seems as though investment banking has its fair share of quirky and shady characters, and I don't believe the authors are exempt from this group.

Otherwise, the book is an extremely entertaining and comedic way to learn about the investment industry and its apparent army of robots working for absurd six figure salaries.

Monkey Business: Swinging Through the Wall Street Jungle is a must read for anyone in the business world, and it's not too bad for anyone looking for a little entertainment and education either.
